Articles and News about Kowa Binoculars

Binoculars or binocular telescopes, are really two identical symmetrical telescopes mounted together. Because they point in the same direction, they allow the viewer to see a far greater distance than with the naked eye. A binocular has a big advantage over single telescopes as you can see through both eyes and they are easier to hold steadily with two hands.

    The Optics

The objective lens diameter generally determines how much light is allowed while the magnification will display the ratio of the focal lengths. An example is 8 X 35 (eight times magnification and 35 mm objective diameter) or 7 X 50 (seven times magnification and 50 mm objective diameter). In these two examples, the first one has a higher magnification ( 8 over 7) but allows less light (35 mm is smaller than 50 mm) than the second one. If you are requiring binoculars for low light use, buy the biggest objective diameter.

    Lens Construction and Coatings

Unfortunately, in any optical instrument used for images (e.g. a telescope, camera, microscope, etc.) light is often reflected and distributed into the view. This can reduce contrast. Reflection can be reduced by adding coating to the optics. Some of the newest techniques are phase-corrected prism and dielectric prism coatings.

Binoculars designed from the Porro prism design are generally brighter than a roof prism design but newer technologies are reducing the differences (the Porro prism binoculars still have the highest value at a lower price).

    Choosing binoculars

Roof-prism models are generally lighter and smaller than Porro models, but you will usually pay more. If the binoculars are sealed and filled with nitrogen gas, they will not cloud with condensation.

lot of difficulty in using the setting circles help !!! please?

i own a celestron powerseeker 127eq. i am facing a lot of difficulty in using the setting circles i.e. the R.A. and Dec circles to align the telescope with heavenly objects above. any kind of advice or name of a site which helps such as a telescope tutorial or such would be greatly appreciated.

More details of the precise problem you are having would help since it is quite a broad area. This article: http://www.skyandtelescope.com/howto/visualobserving/3304206.html?c=y&page=1 covers the process in more detail than anyone would be willing to do so here although the initial introduction is far too pessimistic in my opinion.

If your polar alignment is good then you can navigate over large portions of sky accurately enough that the object in question will at least be in the field of a low power eyepiece: the problems arise when people demand to the degree accuracy from their setting circles when their polar alignment is several degrees out.

However it also has to be said that the setting circles on your scope are not particularly good examples. Good setting circles tend only to be fitted to mid range to high end mounts these days - you would need to spend twice as much on the mount alone as you did on your complete set up.

The key thing to note is that the RA axis will drift away from the correct value as the sky rotates during the course of a night. Most people advocate regularly correcting the RA axis because of this but I always try to avoid it. Instead I adjust the scale so that it will give the correct reading at midnight. Then every time I need the circles I look at the time and calculate how long before or after midnight it is. The difference between sidereal and solar days is small enough that it can be disregarded, so I add or subtract that figure from the RA value I am looking for. In this way I calibrate my RA scale only once.

As for Bullseye's comments they are so wide of the mark I am hesitant to even call them wrong: it is akin to responding "Belgium" when asked "What is 2+3?" Dobs do not have traditional setting circles - they are fundamentally incompatible with polar circles and usually lack even altazimuth circles. The setting circle problem is one of the key disadvantages of the Dobsonian mount.

    Astronomy Project Ideas?

A friend and I have an astronomy project and we have no ideas what we should do. We will accept any ideas. Here is the first paragraph from the sheet we got explaining what it is all about.

"Students are to research ideas for creating a model to be demonstrated in the science classroom. The model should illustrate any aspect of Astronomy and the study of space. You may illustrate, earth, moon, planets, sun, stars, constellations, comets, galaxies, satellites, space vehicles, space suits, telescopes, etc. The field is wide open!
(Oops, one exception. I will accept NO Styrofoam Sun/Planet kits bought and painted!)"

    Thanks! :]
    Oh yeah.
    We're in 8th grade.
    Thought that might help.
    Thanks again.

How about making a drawing of the solar system, but instead of a planet, you replace the picture of the planet with picture of gods represented (including the moons, the asteroids, and the sun itself). It would be awesome I think.

Do you want to drive more safe at night with a better and wider light vision, and see far much beyond the dashboard. HID lights is your best choice, we call it HID lights, hid conversion kits and HID xenon. It's getting more and more popular in the automotive industry, and replaced most of the halogen headlights with it's better light intensity and lower power consumptions.

    What is HID?
An HID light consists of a glass tube that contains tungsten electrodes, gas and metals. You see light emit from the tube when an electrical arc is struck across the electrodes. The gas helps the light to start, and once the metals are heated they function to produce the light. Gardeners enjoy the benefits of using these lights because they provide light that most closely resembles sunlight, a definite plus when you are growing plants indoors without exposure to sunlight. They are also cost efficient, because they last longer than other light bulbs and are more energy efficient.

Here is some specifications for color temperature
HID Color temperature refers to the degrees (K) , which simply the measures of the color for the lighting output, like golden yellow, white, crystal white, blue …
Degree (k) refers only to the color, while lumen refers to the lighting intensity. So the higher the color temperature (degrees K) doesn’t mean a higher light intensity (lumen). Here is the summary for the common color temperature on the market --
    3000K (Golden Yellow) , 4300K (Bright White), 5000K (white), 6000K (Crystal White),8000K (Crystal Blue), 10000K (Aqua Blue), 12000K (Purple-Blue).
5000K or 6000K are the most popular color temperature, and if you are planning to buy the hid kits with 10000K or over, please be careful about the legal issue in your country. Most of the 12000K or 14000K (purple) are using off road only.

Please make sure that you know what kits you need to install your hid lights, here are something you should know before purchasing a new hid kits.
1 . Single Beam Kit, comes with 2 pairs of HID bulbs, 2 ballasts.
(if your vehicle uses 2 pairs of bulbs, 1 for low beam and the other for high beam, you can take this single beam hid kit for your low beams.) Common Bulb sizes are H1, H3, H4-1, H7, 9004-1, 9005, 9006, 9007-1…
    2. High/Low Beam - Hi/Lo Kit, comes with 2 pairs of HID bulbs (one HID and one halogen on each HID bulb to perform the high and low beam function, Halogen for high beam and HID for low beam.) and 2 ballasts. Common bulb sizes are H4-2, 9004-2, 9007-2.
    3. Telescope Kit: Single HID can switch between high beam and low beam, with 2 ballasts and installation clamps. Common bulb sizes are H4-3, 9004-3, 9007-3.
    4. Bi-xenon Kit: 2 HID bulbs on each bulb, which works for high and low beam, with 4 ballasts and installation clamps. Common bulb sizes are H4-4, 9004-4, 9007-4.
Most of the HID Conversion Kits on the market are 35W/12V, you need 24V for a truck. Some hid kits are using 55W, so buyer has to read the specifications carefully.

Do u think this is a good Telescope for my purpose?

I would like to buy this telescope, can some one with good astronomical background give me some comments on this telescope?

I would like to see Planets, Stars, Galaxies, Nebulae and etc.

The Telescope I want to buy is "SkyWatcher Dobsonian - SW680 " The website is as bellow.

Please provide with some comments on this telescope and the advantage and disadvantages of this telescope,

How can this telescope be mount onto a equatorial tripod?

Will this Telescope provide clear image of Galaxies, Nebula and Planets?

    Thank You for your Reply.

Yes, this telescope will be an excellent choice for what you want to observe. I've tested an earlier version of this scope personally, and have many friends who own them. Its optics are very good and its mount solid and easy to use. The adjustable altitude tension is very handy. It will show a wealth of detail on the Moon and planets, and will show you hundreds of deep sky objects. This is precisely the scope which I generally recommend to beginners.

You can easily move the optical tube to an equatorial mount with the addition of a pair of mounting rings, but I would not recommend doing so, as the Dob mount is far easier to use and much lighter in weight to transport. To get the most out of this (or any) telescope you should use it under dark skies, which for most of us means transporting it to a dark sky site. Be sure the tube will fit in your vehicle.

Trying to find a telescope to buy is not always easy. It is not as if, every street has a store selling telescopes. Another option is buying a used telescope. However, is this such a great idea? Are there some things that you need to know, before buying used? In this article, you will discover is it worth buying a used telescope, and how to buy a telescope.

Telescopes are scientific instruments, though you can find cheap telescopes in toy stores, they may not offer you the best option. These telescopes are often flimsy, and easily breakable. And when used, they can be impractical.

These cheap telescopes are of good use, for children who want to explore. A big telescope may not be easy to use, without supervision. However, if you are an adult, then buying a telescope that is bigger, and of good quality, will last for years.

Now, here is a great idea, because, with quality telescopes, they can last for decades. If you find these used telescopes, you will find that they still look like they are in good condition. You could easily buy this type of telescope, and find it works for decades.

It is easy to find a telescope that is at a great price, and only a fraction of what it would cost new. Not to mention that the same amount of money for the used telescope may only get a smaller telescope, that is new. But, there are some things to think about, before choosing to buy a used telescope.

2 big points are necessary, when thinking about buying a telescope. That is the mount and the optics. This applies, whether you are buying used or new. And it becomes more important, with used products.

With used telescopes, a point to first look at is the optics. This is important, because anything wrong with the optics will mean that you will get a lower quality image. In such a case, you may find that a smaller telescope performs better than a used telescope that has bad optics.

The second point is the mount. If the mount when buying used, has any damage, you may find that it is of no use. In this case, you will really need to consider just how much you are saving. Consider how much the telescope would cost new, and factor in the possibility of buying a new mount and tripod.

If it works out cost effective, and you still make a saving, then it may be a point to consider, and buy the used telescope. However, this depends on the optics.

Overall it may be a wise idea to buy new. Especially considering that a good telescope, that is new, could last you decades. It is well worth considering.

    Article Referencing Telescope Mirror

A telescope is a viewing instrument that utilizes the refraction or reflecting of light rays and allows for images to be brought closer. This capturing of light is accomplished through a component that is called the objective.

The objective is that part of the telescope which, through the captured light, provides an image of the object that is being viewed. Typically, the objective is either composed of a set of lenses or a concave mirror.

Now, think about the possibilities of utilizing liquid to mirror reflections back to our vision. The concept of a liquid mirror would be similar to the experience of looking at your image in a pool of water. However, a liquid mirror telescope would be used to peer into the depths of space. At first glance the concept of a liquid mirror telescope seems like something that is a far-fetched and very futuristic.

However, the future is now as astronomers realize the potential of employing a liquid mirror telescope to take the place of a concave mirror that is typically found in a reflecting telescope.

History Of A Liquid Mirror Telescope

Isaac Newton in the 17th century was the first individual to go on record about the possibilities of a liquid mirror telescope. In his studies, he realized that when liquid is spun it forms a natural concave bowl-like shape. This spinning liquid would provide the same shape of the concave mirrors that are used in a reflective telescope.

Unfortunately, his idea was ahead of its time. The reason being is that the electric motor had not been invented. The electric motor would have been needed to provide the rotation required to give the liquid its concave form.

The first documented case of a liquid mirror telescope being used was in 1909. However, it wasn't until 1982 that a physicist by the name of Ermanno Borra modified the design to improve the performance of the liquid mirror telescope. One such telescope is located in British Columbia, Canada.

Structure Of A Liquid Mirror Telescope

Fortunately, today, all of the needed technology is available and has, in fact, brought the practical use of a liquid mirror telescope in to practice. Specifically, the liquid that is used is 30 liters of mercury. This mercury is poured into a concave dish that is built in segments. The dish itself is manufactured from a durable plastic coupled with polyester. The frame that holds the dish is a light metal.
    The Process

In order to form the shape required to optimally provide the reflection needed, the dish begins to spin. The spinning speed is about 7 revolutions per minute. This speed is maintained so that the proper distribution of the mercury occurs.

    Advantages And Disadvantages

The only disadvantage that has been demonstrated in the use of a liquid mirror telescope is the need for the dish to remain parallel. This is obviously due to the fact that if tilted the liquid would flow gravitationally to the end that is tilted downwards.

The advantage is that the area of reflection is extremely large. This larger area provides a greater capacity to capture more light which adds to the visibility of the object being viewed. In turn, this larger area of reflection allows for greater distances in the galaxy to be observed.
