name the best compact zoom binoculars in the £100 range?
My suggestion is to stay away from zoom binoculars. The optics in those are usually rather crappy. For £100 you can get many well made binoculars. Have a look at www.opticsplanet.com. Bushnell Legend and Excursion comes to mind, Nikon Travelite is another.

Articles and News about Best Compact Binoculars
One of the most exciting advancements in sports optics technology is the advent of image stabilization. Binoculars are designed to magnify an image, making it appear closer to the user. The higher the magnification, the closer the subject in the image will appear. However one of the downsides to higher magnification is the fact that the image will move and shake due to small movements in the person holding the binoculars. The higher the magnification of the binoculars, the worse the shaking and movement is. Other factors can also add to the movement, such as vibration of an unsteady surface or even shaking due to excitement. Also as we age it becomes more difficult to hold binoculars steady, making image stabilization technologies that much more important.
It used to be that the only way to compensate for this shaking was to mount the binoculars on a tripod or other supporting structure. For most situations, carrying and setting up a tripod is inconvenient at best, impossible at worst. However, the latest image stabilization technologies now allow for steady images at high powers without the use of a tripod. Even better news is the fact that prices for image stabilized binoculars have dropped dramatically in the past few years, making them more affordable for the average person.
So how do image stabilized binoculars work? There are a variety of technologies on the market, yet most use gyroscopic detectors and motorized internal components that automatically compensate for vibration and small movements. One of the most popular lines of image stabilized binoculars is made by Canon. Canon uses what it known as a Vari-Angle Prism system along with gyroscopic sensors. While this may sound confusing, it basically means that the binoculars have internal sensors that detect movement, as well as moveable prisms that are controlled by the sensors. When the sensors detect vibration, they send a signal to the prisms and the prisms shift the optics slightly to hold the image steady. This provides for steady images even at higher magnifications.
Canon makes a wide variety of image stabilized binoculars, from their compact 8x25 stabilized binoculars to their full size 18x50 high magnification binoculars. They also have a fully waterproof model that uses their highest quality optical glass. This 10x42L stabilized binocular is one of the best rated binoculars on the market today.
What are the best uses for image stabilized binoculars? Boating is a very popular use, as the stabilizers help to compensate for the movement and vibration being on a boat causes. Stabilized binoculars are also popular for hunting, as they can allow for keeping safe distances from the target by using higher magnifications. They are also popular for sporting events, especially when you need to get up close to the action from a distance. Image stabilized binoculars are also excellent for target shooting, bird watching and even astronomy. So if you are looking for a new pair of binoculars, take a close look at the latest image stabilized binoculars and let the newest technology take the shakes out of your viewing!

Articles and News about Kowa Binoculars
Binoculars or binocular telescopes, are really two identical symmetrical telescopes mounted together. Because they point in the same direction, they allow the viewer to see a far greater distance than with the naked eye. A binocular has a big advantage over single telescopes as you can see through both eyes and they are easier to hold steadily with two hands.
The Optics
The objective lens diameter generally determines how much light is allowed while the magnification will display the ratio of the focal lengths. An example is 8 X 35 (eight times magnification and 35 mm objective diameter) or 7 X 50 (seven times magnification and 50 mm objective diameter). In these two examples, the first one has a higher magnification ( 8 over 7) but allows less light (35 mm is smaller than 50 mm) than the second one. If you are requiring binoculars for low light use, buy the biggest objective diameter.
Lens Construction and Coatings
Unfortunately, in any optical instrument used for images (e.g. a telescope, camera, microscope, etc.) light is often reflected and distributed into the view. This can reduce contrast. Reflection can be reduced by adding coating to the optics. Some of the newest techniques are phase-corrected prism and dielectric prism coatings.
Binoculars designed from the Porro prism design are generally brighter than a roof prism design but newer technologies are reducing the differences (the Porro prism binoculars still have the highest value at a lower price).
Choosing binoculars
Roof-prism models are generally lighter and smaller than Porro models, but you will usually pay more. If the binoculars are sealed and filled with nitrogen gas, they will not cloud with condensation.

Are you looking for cheap night vision binoculars? Night vision binoculars are a great invention from modern technology, and despite the name, they can be used during the day as well. There are plenty of reasons one might need to buy one.
You should consider a few things though, before you go buying binoculars. Four of the things that you should be thinking about are listed in this article, and they will insure that you get the best product for your money.
The first thing to consider is the reason why you need or want to buy night vision binoculars. You can use them at a number of activities, such as: camping, surveillance, bird watching, security, fishing, hunting and many others.
The purpose for which they’re going to be used should influence your choice. This way you buy something that fits your needs very well.
The reason to choose according to the activity is that different technology is used for different activities. Those without any real function are usually geared for the use of kids. They work properly, but you just can’t find the same features like you would in pricier and more advanced pairs of night vision binoculars.
Another thing to take into consideration is the quality. As it happens with any other product, different models from different companies have varying quality. That quality can be influenced by the durability or the craftsmanship, by the features or any other number of things.
If you know what you are going to use the binoculars for, it’s easier to find a product that is of the right quality for you.
The third thing you need to think about when you choose night vision binoculars, is what features you need for your particular purpose. The purpose dictates the features that you will need. The fourth thing to think about is the price. The number of features and the quality influence the price quite a bit.
You can get lots of hours of enjoyment out of your night vision binoculars. And that happens whatever the activity that you use them for: surveillance, fishing, hunting.
They’re a great tool to have at your disposal. If you want to buy a pair of night vision binoculars, make sure you think about all four aspects that I mentioned in this article, so that you can pick the pair that doesn’t leave you broke and satisfies your needs at the same time.

Canon Image Stabilized binoculars question:12X36 IS II or 10x42 L IS ?
I have to decide between the 12X36 IS II and the 10x42 L IS WP but cannot find a single review or comment from anyone who has owned or tried both and has been able to compare them.
The "L" is almost double the price, but I am eager to know if it is really twice as good as the 12x and also whether or not it is also worth the extra weight.
If anyone out there has experience of both these binoculars, I would be happy to hear your comments.
Thanks!
If you go to binoculars.com you will find write ups by people who have purchased the IS binouclars. Here is the link.

Article Referencing Stabilized Binoculars
Optical performance is of ultimate importance when deciding which binoculars to buy but what makes IS Binoculars extra special is the ability to use them in moving environments whilst maintaining the clarity of image. Canon IS binoculars are among the best there is for image stabilizing technology with the Canon 10x42L IS, in particular, gaining hot reviews.
Apart from the ability to use IS binoculars while on the go, the technology has another added advantage in that it enables high magnification binoculars to be hand held without experiencing image distortion due to slight movements in the hand. Without image stabilisation the greatest magnification that most people can use without a distorted image is 8x, with IS high magnification binoculars can be hand held (Canon do an 18x50 and Nikon do a 16x32).
So which IS binoculars are the ones to choose? Well it really depends on what you want to use them for.
If you want to use them for astronomy take a look at those with a larger objective lens to ensure maximum light gathering ability such as the 15x50 or 18x50 Canon IS binoculars. The IS technology does make them a little on the heavy side with them both weighing in at 1200g but they are ideal for those times when you just want to pick up binoculars and get viewing without have the hassle of setting up a tripod. The image stabilizing technology doesn't eliminate all the distortion due to movements in the hand but you would be hard to notice slight movements and users absolutely rave about them.
For marine use the Nikon Stabileyes 14x40 and the 10x42 WP Canon IS binoculars are both popular choices.
• The Nikon 14x40 comes with two modes, an on board mode and a land mode, weighs in at 1120g, is exceptionally good for spectacle wearers and is waterproof and fog-free. If you want to add these to your shopping list you'll be looking at spending around £1,300.
• The Canon 10x42 are the first Canon IS binoculars to come with the coveted red L-series professional lenses making them an immensely popular choice. The optical performance is amazing, they are waterproof to 1mtr for 30 minutes and have a close focusing distance of just 2.5mtrs. If you buy on the internet you should be able pick up the Canon 10x42 for less than £900 which is a real bargain given the specification.
For bird watching it depends what is most important, size and weight or a larger objective lens. Again both Nikon and Canon have focused on the needs of the birdwatcher with Nikon offering 12x32 or 16x32 waterproof binoculars that have a reduced vibration mode to enable you to follow fast moving objects with a steady view. However the 14x40 offer 2 vibration modes (not available in the other models) which makes them a more popular choice.
Canon offer full size (10x42), mid-size (12x36) or compact options (10x30 or 8x25). The down side of the mid-size and compact canon IS binoculars are that they aren't waterproof. However, their weight makes them ideal for carrying around (660g, 600g and 490g) and the 12x36 are extremely popular high magnification birding binoculars, affordably priced at around £450.
Overall my preference is the 10 x 42 WP Canon IS binoculars particularly for bird watching and general outdoor pursuits. The L series lenses ensure they deliver an unrivalled performance with outstanding clarity and superior optical performance. Weight can prove an issue for some, at 1030g (a problem with most IS binoculars), but the benefits of image stabilizing technology make it well worth it.

Looking for Nikon Binoculars? Then have a look below to see what we have on offer, stock changes daily
About binoculars: Is Nikon 8x40 Action Extreme ATB good for whale watching on land and on the boat?
This is my first time to purchase a binocular. I can't afford those high end ones at $1,000 & up, but under $200 is ok.
I read through a few websites on how to choose a binocular for whale watching. It seems like 8 x 40 is ideal. On the Amazon.com, this Nikon binocular recieved all 5 stars and costs only around $120. Do you all agree?
I want to start to do whale watching (living by Pacific Coast) on land and maby on the boat in the future, but also plan to use my first binocular to do hiking, bird watching, black bear & grizzly bear watching as well. I know I sound a bit too greedy but I'm only a student... If this Nikon binocular would do a good job for whale watching mainly and other activities, I probably will go for it.
To muncie birder:
I read your answer to a question about binocular. You seem to be very knoweldgable about binoculars. Do you have any experience with the binocular for whale watching? What would you recomand?
These are excellent binoculars. One thing to be aware of. They are probably not water proof even though they say they are, so if you take them on a boat be just a little careful. Don't worry too much though. I took a pair of non-waterproof binoculars out on Monterrey Bay. They worked just fine. These have a super wide field of view which makes them great for bird watching. And 8x40 are great for just about everything. I would not advise holding them under the focet to wash off the sea salt. It might work but as I said be just a little careful.
One thing that might be of interest. A rule of thumb is that you get about 10% better performance for every doubling of price. So you see, these are going to be excellent binoculars.
Here is where you can buy them for $120 including postage. I have bought 2 pair from these folks. A pair for my son and a pair for me. And I recommend them. Ask them if you can hold these under the focet to wash off sea salt. They will know more about them than I do. I had a pair of Nikon binoculars that unfortunately were stolen in Ecuador. They were great.
