PPC - Pay per click search engines

If you're not getting enough traffic from the free search engines or directories you can pay for your visitor traffic instead. The pricing model for doing this is called Pay Per Click

PPC search engines rank web sites by the highest bidder. Who ever bids the highest for a given keyword ranks the highest. You don't actually pay for the ranking, but instead pay only for the number of clicks generated by that listing. For example, if you bid 10 cents for the keyword 'investing' then your account will be debited 10 cents each time someone clicks on your listing and visits your site

To some people the thought of paying for clicks to their site is anathema. Think about it though, if you pay 10 cents for a click and open up an account with $100 on a pay per click search engine, then you will get 1000 clicks to your site. Now if your site sells products and has been shown to give a conversion rate of 4% then theoretically you should get 40 sales for those 1000 visitors. Now if your prepared to pay $100 dollars to get 40 sales then you can see the merit it engaging in a pay per click campaign

PPC's should not, however, be considered a replacement for a top ranking in the regular search results. Augment your free listings in Google, AltaVista and the like by using pay per clicks to drive additional targeted traffic to your site
