Can anyone tell me how to tell a good quality pair of binoculars?Hi I have a pair of binoculars - sakura 10-90x80. They are quite heavy and bulky so i was looking to buy a compact pair. Can anyone tell me the ones that are good quality? If so shall i buy a compact pair with those numbers on it. Or can anyone recommend a nice light powerful pair to me, mainly for bird watching/long distance... Thank you...
Yes I can.
First stay out of the plastic clam shell area at the store.
Second DO go to the counter and see what they have that you can look at.
Thirdly, take the ones you can hold and hold them out at arms length so that the eye part is facing you. Look at the size and shape of the light hole. The rounder and larger the better. If they look square put them back and look at others till you see ROUND. The larger the better. Then, put them to your eyes and use them after setting the focus for both eyes for 3 to 5 min. Yes a long time.
Now lets talk about what the numbers on the binoculars are all about.
The power. 7 8 10 etc. this tells me how much larger the image will be V my eyes with out the binos.
Now lets look at the second number. 30, 35, 38, 40, 50 etc.
This is the size of the front lens.
Now if all was easy it would be easy at this point.
50 divided by 7 gives you a 7
35 divided by 7 gives you a 5
So the larger number gives you more light at your eye.
IF every thing else is the same.
Now look at the binos at arms length and you will see the larger brighter hole. That is good.SO, now if you are looking at the same make and type of bino you have a clue as to what amount of light will get to your eye.
Now it is all up to you and what you want to carry. I own 4 pair from very small belt pouch 8 x 30 nikon to 7 x 50 water proof and 10 x 50 pro prizm that I use only on a tripod looking at stars and wild life.
Now last advice. Walmart has Lupold binos for under $200.00 that are very good for the money. The 10 power Nikon they have are also very good for the price.
Hope that helps.

West Marine Oahu & Maui Compact Binoculars
A little bit about binoculars
Until just the last few years, one pair of binoculars was considered the same as another. Some manufacturers were better known than others and thus there existed a price range. During the last few years, along with the digital camera, the iPod, and the personal computer revolution, a silent but not surprising evolution was occurring in the world of binoculars.
Unknown to the general public, different characteristics of various items already existing in the market places were beginning to become incorporated into the production of binoculars. The names of the majority of the companies involved in this “revolution” remained distant from the minds of the general consumers. This is one of the factors that helps in keeping the prices of top binoculars reasonable.
Out of this silent evolution of the modern day binocular came fourteen different characteristics, each now considered a separate category of binoculars. The only web site, apparently considered the up and coming premier site, on the World Wide Web, that offers all fourteen different types of binoculars, along with more involved binoculars that may include up to four of the fourteen characteristics in one pair of binoculars, goes by the name “A Plus Binoculars”.
Apparently, reading the list of the fourteen categories of binoculars may give those few individuals, still not grasping what was written earlier, a better understanding. The list, then, contains the following: Waterproof; Digital imaging; Perma Focus; Excursion/Travel; Multicoated optics; Compact; Rubber Coated; Nitrogen Charged; Dr/Br/Dt Series; Pro-sport; High Sierra Marine; Night Vision; Range Finder and Image Stabilizer. On this premier web site, at the beginning of each category, one finds an easy to understand, written definition of each of the fourteen types of binoculars.
One of the author’s main goals in producing “A Plus Binoculars” was to represent an item whose rapidly growing popularity is just now beginning. This web site introduces this new generation of a previously older fairly boring item in an exciting educational and financially feasible manner. This website accomplishes this very well indeed, and works towards increasing more rapidly the expected desirability of this product. This new and diverse visual aid is expected to follow the rise in popularity of such items as the digital camera, the mp3 player and the cell phone.
A fair question is why are the prices of these new types of binoculars still reasonable. What is missing, first of all, is the percentage of the price that would normally be falsely elevated due to a well-known manufacturer's name. However, on this web site, the fraction of the price lowered due to this reason cannot account for the actual price of each and every pair of binoculars. Due to the goal of owner of this web site to be the premier web site for binoculars on the world wide web, the prices have been further lowered to the point of making the price of each and every pair of binoculars, a total of 100, the absolute lowest found on the world wide web!
What more can a customer, such as a sportsman or woman, or of a avid traveler, ask for, than the best manufactured type of each of all 14 types of binoculars available, and what’s more, to be able to purchase them at the lowest price that exist on the world-wide-web.
A nice way to bring this press release to a close, I feel, would be to mention a few sentences about the creator and author of “A Plus Binoculars.” Reed Oxman MD, a physician, double boarded in Emergency Medicine and Pain Management, with no computer background what so ever is the author and creator of this visually stimulating, timely, and most economically sound web site. This physician suddenly found himself partially disabled and thus no longer employable in his main area of training, that of the ER. With only the ability to work mainly sitting down such as at his computer, what more perfect a project than a web site. The moral of this story is if you take a few deep breath, consider your situation, you will often come up with solutions that, such as in this case, is bound to be a winner.
About the Author:
Reed Oxman, the author of the above, is also creator and owner of the best place to purchase your needed Binoculars and Digital Binoculars , along with other types such as Waterproof Binoculars that you, your friends, or family may need.
