CCTV Covert Q and A's
Do you think that this will deter criminals?
How effective do you think this will be?
A house at a secret location in the Avon and Somerset Police force area has been wired for pictures and sound in an attempt to catch burglars red-handed. CCTV cameras and a range of high-tech gadgets have been installed in the property, which will be monitored by officers from a control room.
Police would only confirm the property was located in a "burglary hotspot". The crime-fighting tactic follows the success of the force's "covert capture cars" which lock criminals inside. They are then played a taped message informing them a police officer is on their way to arrest them.
Assistant Chief Constable Jackie Roberts said the idea behind the scheme was to put the fear of crime back into criminals.

I think this is a very good idea.
For all the talk about heavier jail sentences or the death penalty for murderers etc these are not particularly effective as deterrents because criminals who plan their crimes don't tend to believe there's a high chance of being caught. Anything which gives criminals greater uncertainty about this has to be an advance. A high prospect of detection is far and away the best deterrent. Schemes like this are a drop in the ocean but I'd certainly like to see more of them.
Incidentally it's only entrapment or a honey trap if there's an 'unusual inducement' to crime eg if the doors of the house or car are left invitingly open in a way which might entice someone to commit a crime they otherwise wouldn't have considered. If there's no element of unusual inducement then, so far as the criminal's concerned, they are breaking in with the formed intent to commit crime. No sympathy for them in that case, or for slippery lawyer arguments that try to spare 'em responsibility for their actions.
Anyway will it deter criminals ? Yes, if schemes like this become more widespread it's at least a start.

Closed circuit television cameras, or CCTV cameras as they are commonly called, are used in today's day and age to improve the security of certain important areas such as airports, railway terminals, banks, government buildings, hotels, and other public places. These cameras can transmit video signals to a specific location and show the recorded data on one or more than one monitors. The signals are transmitted using point to point wireless links, quite unlike that of broadcast television where the signals are transmitted openly. The use of cctv cameras in crime prevention is well known. The security of banks and other government establishments in the present day and age is incomplete without the installation of cctv camera systems.
