What's a good amateur observatory type so I can use my telescope for garden / backyard CCD imaging?
I want something reasonably priced (or cheap) quick and easy to build, and I have no interest in becoming a builder or engineer to get it up and running... It needs to be easy to transport and very quick to open and I'd like something strong and weatherproof. It also needs to be open to the sky, so I can share my interest in amateur astronomy with my wife and visiting friends.
Hi There is a great product available in the UK through Altairastro which is based in Norfolk and they sell the SkyShed POD, which does exactly what you need and details of prices are on there web site www.altairastro.com

Articles and News about CCD Weatherproof
These days, with the size of cameras shrinking and almost every cell phone having the capacity to take a few shots, people expect a camera to be exceptionally portable - and ready to shoot anywhere, even underwater.
In days past, only a pro who'd spent several thousand dollars on equipment would have been able to shoot anywhere - and they had to carry around a heavy load of gear to do it. It was certainly not for the amateur photographer. No longer. Meet the Canon PowerShot D10 waterproof digital camera.
There's nothing heavy about the D10. At only 7.4 oz and measuring just 4.1" x 2.6" x 1.9" you can take it anywhere with very little effort. Shoot anywhere, anytime, even underwater. The Canon D10 is waterproof to 10 meters/33 feet, like most quality watches.
The 3x zoom is fully adequate for a range of close-up to portrait-style shots, just what most everyone will want. Telephoto shots are generally pretty difficult to impossible underwater anyway. And with Canon's superb Digic processor and 12.1 megapixel CCD image sensor you can rest assured even those detailed shots are going to be crisp and rich.
For those who don't want to carry an additional camcorder along, but want to take a few motion sequences, the PowerShot D10 can accommodate. While it may not have all the bells and whistles of a true digital camcorder, it can shoot 30fps VGA at 640 x 480. Good enough to capture Nemo as he floats past you.
If you just want a no fuss camera and you don't enjoy scrolling through menus and making decisions, you're going to appreciate the built in Smart Auto exposure technology. Smart Auto provides automatic scene recognition by comparing the view to an internal set of hidden images. Then, the camera selects the best contrast, color, exposure, and more to get the best possible shot automatically.
Naturally, if you prefer a little more control you can operate the D10 in manual mode. Canon offers a wide range of options, including 18 different scene modes, as well as movie mode. You can select Portrait, Night Scene, Beach, and more to manually adjust the image to your environment or preference.
Not to worry about sturdiness, condensation, shock, temperature, or other environmental factors, either. The Canon D10 can stand up to them all. The housing is completely sealed and you'll find no moisture build-up inside when in or out of the water. Shooting in those colder climes above or below the surface is also no problem.
A heavy-duty lanyard wrist strap can be connected to the case for rock-solid transport. Plug it into any one of 4 corners and off you go. That's not only handy for the left-handed, but gives you a reliable hold anywhere.
With the easy-to-operate compass switch on the D10 you have a four-way controller for the most common menu features. Exposure compensation, macro, resolution, sensitivity, and more can be easily adjusted with a few taps.
Waterproof. Shockproof. Freezeproof. The Canon PowerShot D10, like most of the company's models, is a technological marvel. Combining low price, high-tech, and ease of use is a Canon specialty. They've raised the bar to new heights (or depths, if you prefer) in this case.
If you're looking to buy a waterproof digital camera, check out why the Canon Powershot D10 waterproof camera is an excellent choice!
