    Telescope problem, HELP!?

I have a 6 inch reflector telescope (starhopper) and when I look at mars it is just a bright dot, just like any other star, but when I try to zoom in, I get crosshair like image, just on mars nowhere else. The crosshair is from the top of the inside of my telescope. I thought I collimated it right but dunno??? HELP? Any suggestions will do!
Also when I zoom in heaps I get a reflection of my eye with the crosshairs in front of it

I just answered your question where you posted it a second time above:

    http://ca.answers.yahoo.com/question/index;_ylt=Apbj7xw992A9g6UBuLHq4XUJGAx.;_ylv=3?qid=20080115044938AAaQQ1X

You're not seeing your eye; you're seeing the out-of-focus diffraction pattern of Mars. You need to refocus every time you change eyepieces; Mars should appear as a tiny disk in any eyepiece.

    Article Referencing Crosshair Telescope

A crossbow is a weapon primarily used by hunters. It consists of a bow placed on a stock. The purpose of the crossbow is to shoot projectiles, called bolts, at a target. There is a mechanism in the stock of the crossbow that holds the bow fully drawn. The bow is realized by pressing a trigger. In the past, the crossbow was used not only for hunting but also as a weapon in open warfare.

    Crossbow Structure

The bow of the crossbow is fixed to a stick called the stock or tiller. There is a mechanism that holds the bowstring in the drawn position. The bow is also called the prod or lath and is usually made of a single piece of wood. It is very short compared to a standard bow. As a result the draw length of a crossbow is also very short. Consequently a higher draw weight is necessary to store sufficient energy to launch the projectile effectively.

    Types of Crossbows

Crossbows are classified according to the acceleration system, size, energy, degree of automation and projectiles.

    Straight Bow

The straight and bent prods are the simplest of the acceleration systems. These were the earliest developed of the crossbows.

    Recurve Bow

The recurve crossbow is made with tips that curve away from the person firing the bow. This results in a longer draw length and better acceleration of the projectile. These bows do put more strain on the bow material and are a bit noisier when fired.

    Multiple Bow

This bow has a singular manner of pulling the string using several bows. It is similar to a compound bow. Many bows are used in combination with a tackle system. This results in a faster string speed due to the effect of many bows working at once.
    Compound Crossbow

With a compound crossbow the extremities are stiffer than a recurve bow resulting in more energy efficiency. However, because the limbs are too stiff to draw using a string directly attached to them, the bow has the string attached to pulleys with cables. Drawing the string causes the pulleys to rotate, which pulls the cables that bend the limbs thus storing energy. This system allows for a let-off thus lowering the full draw weight.

    Ammunition

The projectiles that shoot from a crossbow are called bolts. Obviously they are shorter than arrows but can be heavier. Each variation bow has an ideal bolt weight to achieve maximum kinetic energy. The bolts usually have 3 fletches such as are seen on arrows. The bolts can attach to many difference heads depending on the use of the bow. The most common bolt is the four-sided quarrel.

    Attachments for the Crossbow

Crossbows contain sights such as red dot sights or telescopic sights. They may also have multiple crosshairs due to gravitational effects over multiple distances.

Crossbows can also have quivers attached to them. Made of plastic, they hold the bolt along the side of the weapon.

Silencers can also be attached to crossbows that are rather noisy when shot. These silencers are attached to parts of the bow that vibrate quickly causing noise.

    Crossbow in Modern Times

The crossbow of today is used mostly for target shooting. Hunters still use this weapon throughout the world. The crossbow, used with special projectiles, enables whale researchers to take blubber samples without harm to the whale. In the military the Special Forces use these weapons, some tipped with cyanide, in place of a loud gun.

Articles and News about Sunagor Binoculars

The holidays aren’t considered one of the busiest times of year for nothing. As we all know, they usually call for more phone calls, e-mails, luggage-carrying and shopping trips than the norm. I have found myself wading through bustling crowds of shoppers while simultaneously planning a business meeting and scheduling holiday outings with friends over the phone. Whether traveling for business or pleasure, life becomes pretty hectic when you’re barraged with so many things all at once, sometimes inducing headache and sensory overload. Luckily, a wealth of travel gadgets out in the market can minimize holiday stress and keep you organized while being easy on the pocketbook. These gizmos aren’t all work and no play — in addition to saving you time and providing added convenience, many of these products are even fun to use. Here’s a rundown of great holiday travel gadgets you might want to add to your wish list this year:

    1. Balanzza Digital Luggage Scale: This user-friendly device is a must-have for baggage-toting travelers. You need only hook the Balanzza’s strap to your luggage, lift the luggage off the ground until you hear a beeping sound indicating that the weight has registered on the display, and then set the luggage down to read the weight shown on the screen itself. (It can handle items that weigh up to 100 pounds and can display weight in pounds or kilograms.) The handy scale is easy to use and so small you can carry it everywhere.

    2. LiveScribe Pulse Smartpen: When on the move, travelers don’t always have their laptops handy and instead opt for the traditional note-taking-with-a-pen approach. However, scribbling notes on paper later proves inconvenient when the material has to be sent directly to one’s computer, leaving one to do more work in the end. That’s no longer the case thanks to this nifty computer-in-a-pen device, which allows you to take notes that can later be transferred to your computer. Packed with various features including an audio jack, USB connector, speaker and microphone, it allows you to send colleagues hand-written meeting notes and itineraries without having to use a copy machine or scanner. As an added bonus, it also lets you leave the laptop back at the office or in your hotel room. Who knew a pen could do this much?

    3. Belkin Surge Protector: How many times have you had trouble finding a power outlet at an airport or hotel room when you’ve needed it most? There’s no need to sulk any longer. The lightweight Belkin Surge Protector boasts a 360 degree rotating plug, three AC outlets and two USB outlets, ensuring the batteries in your cell phone or iPod stay charged while you sunbathe on the beach or host a business conference. Without a doubt, this comes in handy amid the hustle and bustle of the holiday season.

    4. Klipsch Image S2 and S4 In-Ear Headphones: Let’s say you’re traveling by car or airplane and wish to tune out the noise around you, be it the humming of a car’s motor or a conversation between chatty passengers. That’s when Kipsch’s In-Ear Headphones, which couple high-quality sound and comfort, come to the rescue. Not only do the ear tips naturally fit the contours of your ear canals, but they dramatically reduce background noise – leaving you undisturbed while you listen to your favorite holiday tunes. A great choice for travelers who simply want to lose themselves in music.

    5. Sunagor Micro-Zoom Binoculars: View picturesque beaches, renowned monuments and verdant parks from afar with these light, compact and powerful binoculars. They’re small enough to fit into the palm of your hand, purse or coat pocket yet powerful enough to zoom from 7x to 21x at the touch of a lever. As if that weren’t enough, their multi-coated lenses provide infrared and UV protection.

These products and many more are yours for the taking this holiday season. Holiday travel is draining enough as it is. And while these gadgets may not take all the stress out of holiday travel, they still save you money, time and space – and who doesn’t need a little more of each during this time of year?

lot of difficulty in using the setting circles help !!! please?

i own a celestron powerseeker 127eq. i am facing a lot of difficulty in using the setting circles i.e. the R.A. and Dec circles to align the telescope with heavenly objects above. any kind of advice or name of a site which helps such as a telescope tutorial or such would be greatly appreciated.

More details of the precise problem you are having would help since it is quite a broad area. This article: http://www.skyandtelescope.com/howto/visualobserving/3304206.html?c=y&page=1 covers the process in more detail than anyone would be willing to do so here although the initial introduction is far too pessimistic in my opinion.

If your polar alignment is good then you can navigate over large portions of sky accurately enough that the object in question will at least be in the field of a low power eyepiece: the problems arise when people demand to the degree accuracy from their setting circles when their polar alignment is several degrees out.

However it also has to be said that the setting circles on your scope are not particularly good examples. Good setting circles tend only to be fitted to mid range to high end mounts these days - you would need to spend twice as much on the mount alone as you did on your complete set up.

The key thing to note is that the RA axis will drift away from the correct value as the sky rotates during the course of a night. Most people advocate regularly correcting the RA axis because of this but I always try to avoid it. Instead I adjust the scale so that it will give the correct reading at midnight. Then every time I need the circles I look at the time and calculate how long before or after midnight it is. The difference between sidereal and solar days is small enough that it can be disregarded, so I add or subtract that figure from the RA value I am looking for. In this way I calibrate my RA scale only once.

As for Bullseye's comments they are so wide of the mark I am hesitant to even call them wrong: it is akin to responding "Belgium" when asked "What is 2+3?" Dobs do not have traditional setting circles - they are fundamentally incompatible with polar circles and usually lack even altazimuth circles. The setting circle problem is one of the key disadvantages of the Dobsonian mount.

  • Nikon Binoculars

Looking for Nikon Binoculars? Then have a look below to see what we have on offer, stock changes daily

About binoculars: Is Nikon 8x40 Action Extreme ATB good for whale watching on land and on the boat?

This is my first time to purchase a binocular. I can't afford those high end ones at $1,000 & up, but under $200 is ok.

I read through a few websites on how to choose a binocular for whale watching. It seems like 8 x 40 is ideal. On the Amazon.com, this Nikon binocular recieved all 5 stars and costs only around $120. Do you all agree?

I want to start to do whale watching (living by Pacific Coast) on land and maby on the boat in the future, but also plan to use my first binocular to do hiking, bird watching, black bear & grizzly bear watching as well. I know I sound a bit too greedy but I'm only a student... If this Nikon binocular would do a good job for whale watching mainly and other activities, I probably will go for it.

    To muncie birder:

I read your answer to a question about binocular. You seem to be very knoweldgable about binoculars. Do you have any experience with the binocular for whale watching? What would you recomand?

These are excellent binoculars. One thing to be aware of. They are probably not water proof even though they say they are, so if you take them on a boat be just a little careful. Don't worry too much though. I took a pair of non-waterproof binoculars out on Monterrey Bay. They worked just fine. These have a super wide field of view which makes them great for bird watching. And 8x40 are great for just about everything. I would not advise holding them under the focet to wash off the sea salt. It might work but as I said be just a little careful.

One thing that might be of interest. A rule of thumb is that you get about 10% better performance for every doubling of price. So you see, these are going to be excellent binoculars.

Here is where you can buy them for $120 including postage. I have bought 2 pair from these folks. A pair for my son and a pair for me. And I recommend them. Ask them if you can hold these under the focet to wash off sea salt. They will know more about them than I do. I had a pair of Nikon binoculars that unfortunately were stolen in Ecuador. They were great.
