What things do i need to consider when buying a binocular?
i wanted to buy a binocular for observing the sky instead of buying a telescope because i don't have enough money. so what do the numbers represent? for instance 10x25? thankyou
The first number is the magnification. So 10 is 10 power or "10 X", meaning that the image is magnified 10 times.
25 is the diameter of the objective lenses in millimeters.
For astronomy you'll want to go bigger, at least 35, or even 50.
10x25 is not the combo I'd recommend... you'll be happier with 7x35 or 8x50.
You'll also want the bulkier porro prism style, where the objectives are wider than the eyepieces. Those have fewer interfaces for the light, so the light loss is less. Stay away from the straight bodied binoculars for astronomy.
Last, you'll want to make sure that they are coated optics. It should say on the box, and you can check by looking at the lenses at an angle... it should have a purplish hue.
