Common web site pitfalls to avoid

I visit hundreds of marketing web sites on the Internet every month and I have come up with a few suggestions on things to avoid:

1. Netscape or Microsoft browser buttons on your web site: Wow, how much is Microsoft and Netscape paying you to display those buttons on your web site? Nothing? Then get rid of them

2. Cheap counters: You have have 1,567 visitors to your site since it was a launched last month?! Who cares. Not me. If you want to get a real statistical counter, use a service like http://www.hitbox.com that will show you a lot more than just how many people visited your site

3. No domain name: Your running your web site using Geocities or Tripod and you want to sell me hundreds of dollars worth of marketing material? If you are doing so well, why are you still using a free web service?

4. Music and fancy graphics: Great songs and graphics, but your web page took 10 minutes to load up. Sorry, I'm click happy so I could not stick around long enough to see what you had to offer

5. Spelling errors: Wow, a spelling error right in the headline! If you do not have time to proof read your headline, I wonder what the body of the message looks like!

6. No contact info: Gee, your product looks great and I am ready to order, but there is no contact information or an email address to reach you? Oh well, I will just buy the same product from your competitor

7. Too many promotions: You are promoting over 15 different unrelated programs on your web site. So many programs, so little time. Concentrate on a particular theme and you will increase your chances of making a sale

8. No secured server: You want me to give you my credit card number on a non-secured server? You will have better success teaching a dog how to fly before I give you my credit card number

9. Too much info: You have over 1,000 different links on your home page. Too much info! Break it down by category for easier navigation

10. You want my email address: Show me your privacy statement and I will show you my email address
