Why is my baby red eared slider which i have just bought always closing its eyes? Its active though.?
I just bought it with another RES, one of them is VERY active while the other is nearly always sleeping, closing its eyes, but when i tough it, it moves. Moreover, they refuse to eat, i read an article about giving them routines, but it still doesn't work....Any experts? HELP!!!
How long have you had these turtles? It's normal for turtles to not eat for one, possibly two, weeks as they settle in. However, if you've had them that long there is cause for concern. Also, what are you feeding them? It's a common mistake to feed very young baby turtles adult-sized pellets and they can't bite it and eventually give up. It's also common to feed two turtles in the same tank and when you do that, one will always pig up all the food and grow bigger and stronger while the other can't get any, or as much, and will continue to grow slower and weaker and possibly eventually give up trying.
If one turtle is always sleeping with eyes closed and does not move until you touch him, I'd really suspect he's already starved a bit. Is he smaller than the other one who is active? Is his shell softer in comparison (especially in the center of he bottom shell)? He's likely been kept in a tanks with other turtles up to now and got less of whatever was available.
My advice would be to put a few feeder minnows/guppies in the tank with them (it provides good mental stimulation as the turtles love to chase them and is the best food source for babies as it's what they eat in the wild and they get most of their nutrition from the liver and bones.) Then get your hands on ZooMed's Hatchling formula aquatic turtle food as these are very tiny pellets that baby turtles can get easily. Feed them separately in a separate bowl. This is the best way as there's no mess of leftovers in the tank, and if you eave them in there for an hour they will defecate and you have even less mess in the tank. However, a few turtle I have had flatly refuse to eat if they are separated. If yours are like that, get the plastic feeding rings, two of them, and attach them in opposite corners. These are plastic rings attached to a suction cup that float on the surface of the water and hold the food in one place and the turtles swin under it and eat. This way each has his own ring and if the tougher turtle comes over to steal food from the smaller one, oops! he can just swim over to the other rig that's been left undefended.

Please, please, keep a very close eye on the one you say is always closing his eyes. He may be fine; there are a few individuals that just like to sleep. However, turtles are very good at hiding it when they don't feel good and weak, starving or sick turtles will continue to open their eyes and respond to your touch until they relly can't move anymore and you're not likely to notice how bad he is until something becomes obvious like swollen eyes or a runny nose or something like that. If he were OK, he'd more likely open those eyes and respond to your presence--I mean, he knows you're there long before you touch him.Active Eye For Sale at Auction Prices
